Me encanta conocer a gente como Emma. Es de esas personas que desprenden vitalidad y cercanía hasta de forma virtual. Esa fue mi sensación desde que comencé a conversar con ella en relación a unos espacios super especiales que encontré este verano navegando por internet. Desde el primer momento sentí un flechazo y supe que tenía que alojarme en alguna ocasión allí. Y ese momento llegó en mi viaje de Diciembre por Marruecos.
Emma visitó Marruecos por primera vez cuando un novio que tenía por aquél entonces le regaló un viaje a su elección por su 30 cumpleaños. Ella eligió Marruecos. Durante su estancia, la vida le cambió y ya no volvió más.

I love meeting people like Emma. She is one of those people who exudes vitality and closeness even virtually. That was my feeling since I started talking to her in relation to some super special spaces that I found this summer surfing the internet. From the first moment I felt a crush and I knew I had to stay there sometime. And that moment came on my December trip to Morocco.
Emma visited Morocco for the first time when a boyfriend she had at the time gave her a trip of her choice for her 30th birthday. She chose Morocco. During her stay, her life changed and she never came back.
In this article I take you to Dar Beida, the Castles in the Sand space where I stayed in Essaouira, I also tell you about other incredible locations managed by this company, we will learn a little about who is Emma, I will suggest unique experiences curated by her to make the most of your days in Essaouira and I will end by giving you a series of local recommendations from my point of view and also from the hand of an artist who lives there. Emma se mudó hace ahora ya más de 20 años a Essaouira y allí compró junto con su pareja una casa del siglo XVIII. La restauraron con mucho esfuerzo, ilusión y cariño y con objetos procedentes de sus viajes y de una tienda de muebles que tenían en Londres.
Dar Beida, la casa donde me alojé es como un museo de decoración única que hará las delicias de cualquier persona a la que le guste la decoración y el diseño de interiores. El espacio está repleto de decoración africana, antiguedades marroquíes, máscaras, cuadros, alfombras, artesanía y muebles vintage de los 60 y 70. La atmósfera es muy especial y la casa está cargada de energía, se nota desde que cruzas el umbral de la puerta.

Emma moved to Essaouira more than 20 years ago and there she and her partner bought an 18th century house. They restored it with a lot of effort, enthusiasm and love and with objects from their travels and from a furniture store they had in London.
Dar Beida, the house where I stayed is like a museum of unique decoration that will delight anyone who likes decoration and interior design. The space is filled with African decor, Moroccan antiques, masks, paintings, carpets, handicrafts and vintage furniture from the 60s and 70s. The atmosphere is very special and the house is charged with energy, you can feel it from the moment you cross the threshold of the door.

Comencemos a explorar la casa desde arriba. Dar Beida está construida alrededor de un patio central y tiene 4 plantas. Se alquila íntegramente y en exclusividad y caben hasta 8 personas en sus 4 habitaciones.
Personalmente ya sabéis que adoro los áticos y terrazas y fijaos qué atardeceres y amaneceres se pueden observar desde las dos terrazas de la casa. En estas estancias me sentía especialmente bien.
Essaouira es una ciudad mucho más relajada que otras en Marruecos. Desde las terrazas de Dar Beida solo se oyen las gaviotas y la atmósfera es muy especial, así que esta es otra de esas casas en las que corres el riesgo de no querer salir a explorar la ciudad por lo a gusto que uno se siente dentro de esta casa.
Aún así, sal fuera y descubre una parte muy local y auténtica de Essauira. La casa está en el barrio más marroquí de la medina y a un paso de los mercados de alimentos callejeros locales más auténticos. Está cerca de una de las puertas de la medina, Bab Doukkala.
Camina también por las calles estrechas alrededor de la principal donde se instala el mercado. Según sales de Dar Beida hacia tu derecha. Te sorprenderás.

Let’s start exploring the house from the top. Dar Beida is built around a central courtyard and has 4 floors. It is rented entirely and exclusively and can accommodate up to 8 people in its 4 bedrooms.
Personally you already know that I love rooftops and terraces and look at the sunsets and sunrises that can be seen from the two terraces of the house. In these areas I felt especially good.
Essaouira is a much more relaxed city than others in Morocco. From the terraces of Dar Beida you can only hear the seagulls and the atmosphere is very special, so this is another of those houses where you run the risk of not wanting to go out and explore the city because of how comfortable you feel inside. this house.
Still, get outside and discover a very local and authentic part of Essaouira. The house is in the most Moroccan neighborhood of the medina and a step away from the most authentic local street food markets. It is near one of the gates of the medina, Bab Doukkala.
Also walk through the narrow streets around the main one where the market is installed. As you leave Dar Beida to your right. You’ll be surprised.

En la última planta, tal y como podéis observar en las anteriores fotos, hay un dormitorio con una gran cristalera que tiene una terraza privada y como muchas de las estancias de la casa, un maravilloso techo de madera de thuya. Esta estancia es perfecta para una pareja.
Alrededor de la terraza principal, una planta más abajo, hay dos habitaciones, una perfecta para niños porque tiene la cama subiendo unas escaleras y otra doble. Ambas con chimenea. Entre medias de estas dos habitaciones hay un baño con ducha a ras de suelo.

On the top floor, as you can see in the previous photos, there is a bedroom with a large window that has a private terrace and like many of the rooms in the house, a wonderful thuya wood ceiling. This room is perfect for a couple.
Around the main terrace, one floor below, there are two bedrooms, one perfect for children because it has a bed up a flight of stairs and another double bedroom. Both have a fireplace. In between these two bedrooms there is a bathroom with a walk-in shower.
Las fotos anteriores corresponden a detalles de la cocina. Desde las estacias superiores, bajas unas escaleras maravillosas y llegas a una planta donde al fondo hay un comedor con cocina y donde a continuación se distribuye hacia la izquierda una sala de estar con dos chimeneas, librería, equipo de música y juegos y hacia la derecha un maravilloso baño y un dormitorio super acogedor con aires ibicenco-africanos. Esta planta se convirtió en otra de mis áreas favoritas de la casa y fue base de operaciones para retransmitir mis aventuras en Instagram mientras estaba alojada en esta casa.
En esta planta me quedé maravillada según entré observando todos los detalles: paredes blanquísimas llenas de máscaras africanas, lámparas alucinantes, una jaula preciosa bajo un lucernario, pieles y calaveras de animales, esas fantásticas chimeneas que tiene esta casa, artesanía marroquí y figuras y muebles de diseño, todo conviviendo en perfecta armonía. Alucinante. No en vano, The New York Times definió a Dar Beida como una resplandeciente caverna de arte pop. La casa es super cool. Mirad el siguiente bloque de fotos con todo lo que hay en esta planta principal.

The photos above are details of the kitchen. From the upper stairs, you go down some wonderful stairs and reach a floor where at the back there is a dining room with kitchen and then on the left a living room with two fireplaces, library, stereo and games and on the right side a wonderful bathroom and a super cozy bedroom with Ibizan-African air. This floor became another of my favorite areas of the house and was the base of operations to broadcast my adventures on Instagram while I was staying in this house.
On this floor I was amazed as I entered observing all the details: white walls full of African masks, amazing lamps, a beautiful cage under a skylight, animal skins and skulls, those fantastic fireplaces that this house has, Moroccan crafts and designer figures and furniture, all coexisting in perfect harmony. Mind-blowing. The house is super cool. Not in vain, The New York Times defined Dar Beida as a resplendent cavern of pop art. Check out the next block of photos with everything on this main floor.

Enma me comentó que cuando inició su proyecto, las mayores dificultades a las que se tuvo que enfrentar fueron las de encontrar albañiles que supiesen lo que hacían. Por aquél entonces las reformas eran muy sencillas y este concepto era muy pionero, así que era difícil encontrar a gente con experiencia y que supiese lo que hacía.

Pregunté a Emma qué era lo que más y menos le gustaba de un país como Marruecos para vivir y me comentó que lo que más le gusta es la generosidad de la gente y la sencillez con la que viven, el hecho de que tengan tan poco pero que sin embargo estén tan contentos. Ella considera que todos tenemos que aprender una lección de ellos.
También la pregunté que qué era lo que le había dado Marruecos que sintiese que otro lugar no le pudiese dar. Su respuesta fue que viviendo en un país como Marruecos y particularmente en una zona como Essaouira, tiene tiempo para no estar en la rueda del hámster como todo el mundo, tiempo para respirar y ver la vida real y lo que es importante. Ella siente que esto nos lo han robado en el mundo occidental con la forma en la que trabajamos y el consumismo al que estamos sometidos, entre otras cosas. Al fin y al cabo no necesitamos todo lo que creemos que necesitamos, cuanto más tenemos, más estresadas y complicadas se vuelven nuestras vidas, así que siempre ¡menos es más!
A Emma no le gusta la palabra inshalla – (o «si Dios quiere») – algo que en Marruecos oirás a cualquier hora del día y en cualquier momento de una conversación. Según ella, el motivo es que parece ser que Dios rara vez quiere que las cosas que están preestablecidas se lleven a cabo cuando se supone que deben hacerse.

I asked Emma what she liked most and least about a country like Morocco to live in and she told me that what she likes most is the generosity of the people and the simplicity with which they live, the fact that they have so little but are nevertheless so happy. She believes that we all need to learn a lesson from them.
I also asked her what it was that Morocco had given her that she felt that another place could not give her. Her answer was that living in a country like Morocco and particularly in an area like Essaouira, she has time to not be on the hamster wheel like everyone else, time to breathe and see real life and what is important. She feels that this has been stolen from us in the western world with the way we work and the consumerism we are subjected to, among other things. At the end of the day we don’t need everything we think we need, the more we have, the more stressed and complicated our lives become, so always less is more!
Emma doesn’t like the word inshalla – (or «God willing») – something that in Morocco you will hear at any time of the day and at any time of a conversation. According to her, the reason is that it seems that God rarely wants things that are pre-arranged to be done when they are supposed to be done.
El negocio de Emma surgió orgánicamente cuando empezó a pasar cada vez más tiempo en Essaouira y se compró Dar Emma. Comenzó a alquilarla mientras iba y venía para seguir atendiendo su puesto de flores en Londres. Posteriormente adquirió Dar Beida con su pareja Graham y decidieron embarcarse en el reto de renovar este museo viviente que hemos conocido en este artículo. La casa enseguida atrajo a la prensa y a publicaciones de diseño de interiores.
Essaouira al fin y al cabo no está muy lejos de Londres y aunque en ocasiones eche de menos el arte y la cultura, ella opina que vivir bajo el sol tiene sus ventajas, ¡y yo coincido con ella! De hecho yo diría que hasta te cambia el estado de ánimo, con lo que si un país te enamora y tienes un proyecto, el resultado a veces viene de manera natural.
A lo anterior hay que añadir que a Emma se la nota desde kilómetros de distancia que siente pasión por lo que hace. A ella le encanta compartir con los clientes las experiencias mágicas que se pueden vivir en Essaouira. Además ella siente que en este lugar del mundo tiene su proposito y el mismo nada tiene que ver con el dinero. Considera que lo que hace tiene un componente social. De hecho, tus vacaciones alojandote con Emma van a ser todo menos ordinarias, te lo aseguro.

Emma’s business came about organically when she started spending more and more time in Essaouira and bought Dar Emma. She started renting it out as she came and went to continue running her flower stall in London. She then bought Dar Beida with her partner Graham and they decided to embark on the challenge of renovating this living museum that we have met in this article. The house immediately attracted the press and interior design publications.
Essaouira is after all not far from London and although she sometimes misses the art and culture, she believes that living in the sun has its advantages, and I agree with her! In fact I would say that it even changes your mood, so if you fall in love with a country and you have a project, the result sometimes comes naturally.
In addition to the above, you can tell from miles away that Emma is passionate about what she does. She loves to share with clients the magical experiences that can be lived in Essaouira. Emma trabaja con pasión y se desvive por todos y cada uno de sus clientes haciendo que su estancia sea realmente memorable. Emma vive en Sidi Kaouki con su pareja, perros, gatos y su hijo Kai, a unos 20 minutos de Essaouira. Recibe a todos y cada uno de sus clientes y la definición de su servicio es total atención al detalle. Por eso el boca a boca ha sido su mejor publicidad.
Emma te enseña un lado de Essaouira que no todo el mundo ve. Por eso me gusta su perspectiva. Esto consume mucho de su tiempo y energías, pero siempre encuentra manos amigas que la ayudan con Kai, quien dicho sea de paso, ha crecido en libertad, adaptándose a la realidad local, sabiendo de donde viene todo lo que come y sin ser adicto a máquinas de ningún tipo.
Vivir aquí en un lugar tan virgen, con playas increíbles en las que no hay nadie y lugares alucinantes para hacer barbacoas y picnics es todo un lujo. ¿No creéis? Generalmente en estos lugares del mundo hay menos competitividad o consumismo, así que es una vida sana tanto para adultos como para niños.
Para Emma la corrupción es, por supuesto, una pesadilla, y la burocracia puede llegar a ser difícil, pero por el contrario el sol brilla la mayoría de los días, la gente es encantadora y ese sentimiento mantiene a Emma en un gran subidón.

Emma lives in Sidi Kaouki with her partner, dogs, cats and son Kai, about 20 minutes from Essaouira. She welcomes each and every one of her clients and the definition of her service is total attention to detail. That’s why word of mouth has been her best advertisement.
Emma shows you a side of Essaouira that not everyone sees. That’s why I like her perspective. This consumes a lot of her time and energy, but she always finds helping hands with Kai, who by the way, has grown up in freedom, adapting to the local reality, knowing where everything he eats comes from and not being addicted to machines of any kind.
Living here in such an unspoiled place, with incredible beaches where there is no one and incr places for barbecues and picnics is a luxury, don’t you think? Generally in these parts of the world there is less competitiveness or consumerism, so it’s a healthy life for both adults and children.
For Emma, corruption is, of course, a nightmare, and the bureaucracy can be difficult, but on the other hand the sun shines most days, the people are lovely and that feeling keeps Emma on a great high.
La misma filosofía de Emma comparte uno de los músicos que conocí durante mi estancia en Essaouira y del que pasaré a hablaros tras una pizca de mis recomendaciones para vivir Essaouira tal y como lo hace un local.
Para mí esta ciudad tiene una atmósfera muy especial y relajada que gira en torno a la música. Cada atardecer me iba de paseo por la medina y me acababa metiendo en los lugares más mágicos e insospechados , que no precisamente son los que vienen en las guías o los que más tiempo dedican a hacer su marketing a través de redes sociales. De hecho, sucede todo lo contrario. Muchos de los lugares que te voy a comentar no hacen trabajo de marketing en redes.
Os recuerdo que podéis ver mis historias destacadas en Instagram en las carpetas «MA Scout I& MA Scout II» donde aparece mucho más contenido del que extraigo en estos artículos y esta perspectiva local que os comento.
Una de las jam sessions más animadas me la encontré tras cenar en el Restaurante Cafe des Arts. Lo descubrí casualmente porque desde fuera sus escaleras me llamaron la atención

For me this city has a very special and relaxed atmosphere that revolves around music.. Every evening I went for a walk in the medina and I ended up getting into the most magical and unsuspected places, which are not exactly those that come in the guides or those who spend more time marketing through social networks. In fact, the opposite is true. Many of the places I am going to tell you about do not do any marketing work on social networks.

One of the most lively jam sessions I found after dinner at Cafe des Arts Restaurant. I discovered itby chance because its stairs caught my attention from the outside.

Restaurantes con entrada y decoración bonita, hay en cada esquina. Verás algunos que están más orientados a locales y otros a turistas. Creo que si me conces, sabes donde te voy a recomendar ir. A veces me quería parar en cada esquina a hacer fotos, pero esto lo dejaré para otro viaje a Essaouira, que seguro que voy a volver!

Restaurants with nice entrances and decorations, there are on every corner. You will see some that are more oriented to locals and others to tourists. I think if you know me, you know where I will recommend you to go. Sometimes I wanted to stop at every corner to take pictures, but I’ll leave that for another trip to Essaouira, where I will surely return!

Este de las fotos anteriores sí que os lo voy a recomendar. Se llama Triskala y me gustó mucho, no solo por la decoración. La comida también merece la pena. Lo tenía apuntado y además me lo recomendó Emma. Seguro que no os arrepentiréis si lo visitáis.
También Emma me dijo que probase Madada. No fuí finalmente, pero os lo dejo por aquí porque he leído críticas buenísimas.

I am going to recommend this one in the previous photos. It is called Triskala and I liked it a lot, not only for the decoration. The food is also worth it. I had it written down and Emma recommended it to me. I’m sure you won’t regret it if you visit it.

Tenéis que pasar a la trastienda de alguna tienda que veáis en la calle principal de Essaouira. Hacedlo con quien os inspire confianza. No tienen solo lo que veis fuera, dentro existe todo un universo. Al menos en el caso de esta que os indico. La tienda en cuestión está bajo el Mega Loft, (foto uno) un lugar que es curioso conocer por su decoración sobre todo.
Este hombre del desierto en aquella tenda me sacó toda su artillería pesada a modo de joyas Amazigh. (foto dos) Tenía maravillas.
Para joyas id a ese lugar o al gremio de joyeros. Esto lo tendréis que preguntar a cualquier local, porque a mí me indicaron cómo ir. Este gremio son calles en la medina llenas de maravillosas tiendas de plata con colgantes, anillos, etc Recuerdo que estuve comprando allí justamente cuando Marruecos perdió en la FIFA. Medio pueblo estaba viendo el partido en la plaza y los que quedaban vendiendo, estaban muy atentos a la TV, así que pude negociar grandes gangas en cuanto a precios!
Emma me recomendó para joyas un lugar llamado Tazra. Omar Samat tiene la mejor selección de joyas antiguas de la ciudad y algunas piezas nuevas que él mismo fabrica. Sus precios son muy razonables y fijos y habla bien inglés.

You have to go to the back of a store you see in the main street of Essaouira. Do it with the one who inspires confidence. For jewelry go to that place or to the jewelers guild. This you will have to ask any local, because I was told how to go. This guild are streets in the medina full of wonderful silver stores with pendants, rings, etc. I remember I was shopping there just when Morocco lost in FIFA. Half the town was watching the game in the square and those who were left selling, were very attentive to the TV, so I was able to negotiate great bargains in terms of prices!
Emma recommended a place called Tazra for jewelry. Omar Samat has the best selection of antique jewelry in town and some new pieces that he makes himself. His prices are very reasonable and fixed and he speaks good English.
Y esto fue una recomendación de Emma también, que es como una caja de sorpresas, lo conoce todo! Maridadi es la tienda de Alison, que viaja por todo África buscando telas y decoración interesante. Aquí hay una magnífica representación de Ghana, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali etc…

Saliendo del Triskala y por casualidad, escuché música gnawa viniendo de lo alto de un edificio que resultó ser una especie de centro social autogestionado. Los que me conocen, ya saben lo que hice, por supuesto subí arriba. No lo puedo evitar cuando se trata de música. Oigo música buena y tengo que entrar.
Gnawa es una estilo musical fascinante que aúna culturas milenarias, dioses y espíritus traídos del Sur de África, con la cultura y religión del Norte.
En ese lugar conocí a Ayoub Natti Dread y a los músicos que estaban con él, escuché música gnawa y estuvimos todos conversando.
Podéis encontrar a Ayoub en muchos lugares de Essaouira tocando. Aquí teneis su Facebook e Instagram para que contactéis con él y le vayáis a ver, porque merece mucho la pena lo que hace. A mí la música gnawa siempre me ha gustado y me parece medio hipnótica. De hecho estaba justo viendo este documental donde se habla de las conexiones espirituales en la música gnawa, del trance asociado y de sus orígenes. En el vídeo, Ayoub muestra al entrevistador todas las conexiones.

Leaving Triskala and by chance, I heard gnawa music coming from the top of a building that turned out to be some kind of self-managed social center. Gnawa is a fascinating musical style that brings together ancient cultures, gods and spirits brought from Southern Africa, with the culture and religion of the North.
In that place I met Ayoub Natti Dread and the musicians who were with him, I listened to gnawa music and we were all talking.
You can find Ayoub in many places in Essaouira playing. Here you have his Facebook and Instagram so you can contact him and go see him, because it’s very worthwhile what he does. I’ve always liked gnawa music and I find it half hypnotic. In fact I was just watching this documentary that talks about the spiritual connections in gnawa music, the associated trance and its origins. In the video, Ayoub shows the interviewer all the connections.
Ayoub es de Casablanca, pero lleva ya más de 20 años viviendo en Essaouira. Actualmente tiene 36 años. Para él, Essaouira tiene una vibración especial, muy sana y con muy buena energía. Por eso se quedó. Y como no, porque esta es la ciudad de la música.
En Essaouira además se celebra todos los años el Festival de la Música Gnawa. Un crisol de fusión musical donde los maestros Gnawa invitan a músicos del mundo a explorar nuevos caminos.

Ayoub recomienda encarecidamente a cualquiera que visite Essaouira visitar el Marché aux Poissons, el mayor de los dos mercados de pescados que hay en Essaouira. Aquí decenas de pescadores te venden pescado fresco.
Después de hacer una selección y negociar un precio, puedes acercarte a uno de los varios restaurantes que salpican el puerto. Entrega tu botín al cocinero, toma asiento y disfruta de la vista.
Justo al final de un corto pasaje de Avenue Mohamed Zerktouni, la vía principal en la medina de Essaouira, se encuentra otro mercado de pescado, el Souk Laghzal. Este mercado más pequeño tiene puestos permanentes y ofrece una selección similar, pero más pequeña, de pescados y mariscos frescos. También hay puestos de especias para darle sabor. Varios restaurantes se encuentran escondidos en la miríada de callejuelas sinuosas que se ramifican desde Avenue Mohamed Zerktouni. Estos restaurantes asan el pescado fresco traído por los clientes y sirven las comidas en coloridas mesas que se alinean en las paredes de la medina.

Ayoub strongly recommends anyone visiting Essaouira to visit the Marché aux Poissons, the larger of the two fish markets in Essaouira. Here dozens of fishermen sell you fresh fish.
After making a selection and negotiating a price, you can approach one of the several restaurants that dot the port. Hand over your booty to the cook, take a seat and enjoy the view.
Just down a short passage from Avenue Mohamed Zerktouni, the main street in Essaouira’s medina, is another fish market, Souk Laghzal. This smaller market has permanent stalls and offers a similar, but smaller, selection of fresh fish and seafood. There are also spice stalls for flavor.
Several restaurants are tucked away in the myriad of winding alleys that branch off from Avenue Mohamed Zerktouni. These restaurants grill fresh fish brought in by customers and serve the meals on colorful tables that line the walls of the medina.
