La Maison de Tanger: An oasis in the bohemian city [ESP-ENG]
Tanger es una ciudad llena de historias de espías, de misterios, de mitos y de leyendas que me capturó absolutamente. Tiene una vibración muy especial y está cargada de energía. Al espacio del que os voy a hablar hoy, le sucede un poco lo mismo.
Voy a tratar de explicaros este concepto al que me refiero para que entendáis lo que quiero decir. Es como si caminando por las callejuelas de Tanger uno sintiese el peso de la historia o que allí han sucedido muchas cosas. Cuando te sientas en el salón de La Maison de Tanger, o cuando estás frente a la piscina de su jardincito, percibes una sensación similar.
La ciudad tiene una especie de espíritu un tanto canalla, cosmopolita y clandestino que de alguna manera trasciende y se siente diferente a como puedes percibir la energía en otros destinos. No en vano, Tanger siempre tuvo fama de ser una ciudad que atraía a todo tipo de artistas, aristócratas o nobles exiliados y a personas en búsqueda de un estilo de vida bohemio y en el que primase la libertad y el buen vivir. Tangier is a city full of stories of spies, mysteries, myths and legends that absolutely captured me. It has a very special vibe and is full of energy. The space I’m going to talk about today is a little bit the same.
I am going to try to explain this concept I am referring to so that you understand what I mean. It is as if walking through the narrow streets of Tangier you feel the weight of history or that many things have happened there. When you sit in the lounge of La Maison de Tanger, or when you are in front of the pool in its little garden, you get a similar feeling.
The city has a kind of somewhat rogue, cosmopolitan and underground spirit that somehow transcends and feels different from how you might perceive the energy in other destinations. Not in vain, Tangier has always had a reputation for being a city that attracted all kinds of artists, aristocrats or exiled nobles and people in search of a bohemian lifestyle and in which freedom and good living prevailed. You should look for information about the Beat Generation to discover between the lines what I mean.

Diversas personalidades se sintieron atraidas por el estilo de vida permisivo, indulgente y libertino de esta ciudad. Por aquí pasaron escritores como William Burroughs o Jack Kerouac, Rita Hayworth, personajes americanos de la alta sociedad como Barbara Hutton o políticos e intelectuales como Winston Churchill. También esta ciudad atrajo a otros artistas como Tennessee Williams, Henri Matisse, Delacroix, Pío Baroja, Jacinto Benavente o Gaudí, por tan solo nombrar algunos ejemplos.
Con este interesante telón de fondo, una no puede más que buscar un lugar acorde al peso de toda esta excitante historia. Acerté de lleno cuando me decidí por La Maison de Tanger y supe que sus propierarios eran dos músicos canadienses. Como me sucede con la mayoría de las localizaciones concepto boutique que me inspiran, de repente sentí una curiosidad inmensa por saber más sobre este lugar. A lo largo de este artículo, os contaré la historia de esta localización basandome en una entrevista que tuve con Jeff, uno de los socios. También descubriréis porqué La Maison de Tanger es una opción triunfadora para alojarse en Tanger.

Diverse personalities were attracted by the permissive, indulgent and libertine lifestyle of this city. Writers like William Burroughs or Jack Kerouac, Rita Hayworth, American high society figures like Barbara Hutton or politicians and intellectuals like Winston Churchill passed through here. This city also attracted other artists such as Tennessee Williams, Henri Matisse, Delacroix, Pío Baroja, Jacinto Benavente or Gaudí, just to name a few.
With this interesting backdrop, one can only look for a place that fits the weight of all this exciting history. I was right on the money when I decided on La Maison de Tanger and learned that its owners were two Canadian musicians. As with most boutique concept locations that inspire me, I was suddenly immensely curious to know more about this place. Throughout this article, I will tell you the story of this location based on an interview I had with Jeff , one of the partners. You will also discover why La Maison de Tanger is a winning choice to stay in Tangier.

Alex Henry Foster y Jeff Beaulieu, los socios de La Mansión de Tanger, tienen una banda de rock alternativo canadiense que según Jeff es una especie de cruce o encuentro entre Mogwai, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, The Cure o Swans.
Su antigua banda se llamaba Your Favourite Enemies y llegaron a Marruecos en 2016 después de haber estado girando casi tres años alrededor del mundo en un proyecto que es autogestionado. El propio grupo graba y produce su propia música en una antigua iglesia reconvertida en estudio de grabación, diseñan su propio merchandising, realizan su propio marketing, gestionan sus conciertos o diseñan la estrategia de lanzamiento. Y a parte de lo anterior, viajan, actúan, etc.
Para los que no seáis conocedores de la industria de la música, sabed que esto es agotador. Alex se encarga más de la parte artística, la visión musical y otros asuntos relacionados y Jeff se hace cargo más del back-end o de «la parte más aburrida» como me comentaba entre risas en mi conversación con él.

Alex Henry Foster and Jeff Beaulieu, the partners of La Mansion de Tanger, have a Canadian alternative rock band that according to Jeff is a kind of cross or meeting between Mogwai, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, The Cure or Swans.
Their former band was called Your Favourite Enemies and they came to Morocco in 2016 after having been touring almost three years around the world in a project that is self-managed. The band themselves record and produce their own music in an old church converted into a recording studio, design their own merchandising, do their own marketing, manage their concerts or design the launching strategy. And apart from the above, they travel, perform, etc.
For those of you who are not music industry insiders, know that this is exhausting. Alex is more in charge of the artistic side, the musical vision and other related matters and Jeff is more in charge of the back-end or «the boring part» as I laughingly commented in my conversation with him.
Tras este tour de casi tres años, estaban agotados y decidieron que debían tomar unas vacaciones en algún país que aún no hubiesen visitado. Alex siempre se había sentido atraído por Tanger ya que es un gran fan de la Generación Beat. Jeff sin embargo opinaba que debían hacer un viaje a Estambul.
Finalmente volaron a Casablanca, alquilaron una van para 8 y se encontraron recorriendo el país durante tres semanas donde por supuesto les sucedieron múltiples anécdotas, pero desde el primer momento Tanger captó su atención de una manera especial. En un punto del viaje encontraron un guía que les acabó contando una historia sobre Paul Bowles, del que Alex por supuesto es un gran fan. Esto les condujo hasta un hotel mítico en Tanger, Dar Nour, lugar donde tras una puesta de sol con vistas increíbles acompañada por una botella de vino, conocieron a los dueños y conectaron a la perfeccción. Posteriormente ellos les ayudarían con la búsqueda del espacio en Tanger.
Tanger siempre ha ejercido una gran fascinación sobre artistas de diversa índole y como afirman en la web de Dar Nour, vagando por las calles de esta inspiradora ciudad, a menudo tienes la sensación de estar dentro de un cuadro de Matisse o Delacroix, de una canción de los Rolling Stones o Christophe, o en las páginas de una novela de Kerouac o de Paul Bowles. Esta energía cautivó a nuestros protagonistas.

After this tour of almost three years, they were exhausted and decided that they should take a vacation in a country they had not yet visited. Alex had always been attracted to Tangier as he is a big fan of the Beat Generation. Jeff however was of the opinion that they should take a trip to Istanbul.
They finally flew to Casablanca, rented a van for 8 and found themselves touring the country for three weeks where of course many anecdotes happened, but from the first moment Tangier captured their attention in a special way. At one point in the trip they met a guide who ended up telling them a story about Paul Bowles, of whom Alex is of course a big fan. This led them to a mythical hotel in Tangier, Dar Nour, where after a sunset with incredible views accompanied by a bottle of wine, they met the owners and connected perfectly. Later they would help them with the search for space in Tangier.
Tangier has always held a great fascination for artists of various kinds and as they state on the Dar Nour website, wandering the streets of this inspiring city, you often have the feeling of being inside a painting by Matisse or Delacroix, a song by the Rolling Stones or Christophe, or in the pages of a novel by Kerouac or Paul Bowles. This energy has captivated our protagonists.

Me gustó comprobar cómo Jeff coincide conmigo en afirmar que Tanger tiene una vibración y energía especial que trasciende, tal y como comentaba al principio de este artículo. Es algo que en esta ciudad de Marruecos se percibe diferente a otros lugares del país.
Según Jeff, en Tanger suceden muchas cosas. Desde aquí África y Europa se dan la cara estando muy cercanas, también desde este lugar comienzan o acaban muchos sueños por ser uno de los puntos puente hacia Europa, punto de partida o punto final del camino, localización de alegrías o de tragedias, de sueños cumplidos o rotos, el lugar donde se cruza el Océano Atlántico con el Mar Mediterraneo, un lugar internacional donde puedes encontrar iglesisas católicas conviviendo con sinagógas, mezquitas y una mezcla cultural muy rica e interesante

I liked to see how Jeff agrees with me in affirming that Tanger has a special vibration and energy that transcends, as I mentioned at the beginning of this article. It is something that in this Moroccan city is perceived differently from other places in the country.
According to Jeff, there is a lot going on in Tangier. From here Africa and Europe face each other being very close, also from this place many dreams begin or end because it is one of the bridge points to Europe, starting point or end point of the road, location of joys or tragedies, of fulfilled or broken dreams, the place where the Atlantic Ocean crosses the Mediterranean Sea, an international place where you can find catholic churches coexisting with synagogues, mosques and a very rich and interesting cultural mix.

La magia de Tanger se refleja en el arte o en la calidez humana de la gente y el contexto internacional en escenas como los dos ejemplos que me puso Jeff en cuanto a la vibrante escena cultural de la ciudad.
Por ejemplo, puedes entrar en un pub inglés llamado London Pub con sus grandes pantallas de televisión y sofás acogedores pero donde al final y a pesar del nombre, nada tiene que ver con Londres. En las pantallas de fondo hay un partido de fútbol, pero suena Toni Braxton, Brian Adams o música romántica y extraña de los ochenta. Hay flores encima de las mesas, se sirve alcohol (que en teoría no se puede pero que encuentras en todas partes) y de repente el camarero te pregunta si te apetece cenar sushi. Sushi, en Tanger en un pub inglés. Y te preguntas, ¿qué está sucediendo aquí? Pero ahí no acaba todo, de repente una chica comienza a actuar cantando una mezcla de sonidos andaluces con árabes y todo el mundo se integra. Intentando averiguar qué es lo que ha sucedido esa noche, te sientes como si hubieras estado en doce sitios en un mismo espacio en una noche donde quizá nada tiene sentido. Pero Tanger despliega su magia y hará que toda esta mezcla extraña y heterogenea adquiera un significado especial y único.
O quizá sales a tomar la última copa una noche, entras en un lugar y acabas un Lunes en una jam session improvisada de sonidos hipnóticos hasta que abandonas a las 5 de la madrugada con el lugar absolutamente lleno aún. Creo recordar que Jeff me dijo que este lugar se llamaba Disco Radio.
Tanger es el nuevo lugar de moda en Marruecos con una escena vibrante donde suceden muchas cosas.

The magic of Tangier is reflected in the art or in the human warmth of the people and the international context in scenes like the two examples Jeff gave me of the city’s vibrant cultural scene.
For example, you can walk into an English pub called London Pub with its big TV screens and cozy sofas but where in the end and despite the name, nothing has to do with London. On the screens in the background there is a soccer match, but Toni Braxton, Brian Adams or weird romantic music from the eighties is playing. There are flowers on the tables, alcohol is served (which in theory is not allowed but which you can find everywhere) and suddenly the waiter asks you if you feel like having sushi for dinner. Sushi, in Tangier in an English pub. And you wonder, what is going on here? But it doesn’t end there, suddenly a girl starts to perform singing a mix of Andalusian and Arabic sounds and everyone joins in. Trying to figure out what has happened that night, you feel like you have been to twelve places in the same space on a night where perhaps nothing makes sense. But Tangier unfolds its magic and will make all this strange and heterogeneous mixture acquire a special and unique meaning.
Or maybe you go out for a nightcap one night, walk into a place and end up on a Monday in an impromptu jam session of hypnotic sounds until you leave at 5am with the place still absolutely packed. I seem to remember Jeff telling me this place was called Disco Radio.
Tanger is the new hot spot in Morocco with a vibrant scene where a lot is happening.

Tanger tiene mucho movimiento y una energía que atrapa. Siempre está muy vivo, pero al ser una ciudad de puerto tiene esa energía de gente que sale y entra constantemente. Incluso para las agencias turísticas es un lugar de tránsito. Y eso es una pena, porque de verdad que no exagero si os digo que tres días aquí se os podrían hacer muy cortos.
Volviendo a la historia de nuestros protagonistas, cuando la banda volvió a Canadá tras el tour de 3 semanas por Marruecos, desgraciadamente el padre de Alex falleció y él sintió que necesitaba volver a Tanger para reencontrarse consigo mismo. Lo comentó con Jeff y lo que parecía que en principio iba a ser un periodo de unas semanas se acabó convirtiendo en meses.
Cuando Jeff fue a verle, Alex le comentó que había conocido a todo tipo de personas en lo que para él se convirtió en un periodo muy especial de su vida. La energía de Tanger a veces te lleva a sentarte con alguien, comenzar a hablar y poder pasar toda la tarde sin casi sentir que el tiempo pasa. Comentó a Jeff que quería traerse a la banda a Tanger en el espacio de un amigo que quería convertir a su casa en una residencia artística. Allí pasaron seis meses todos juntos y nació «Windows in the Sky», el nuevo álbum de Álex en aquél momento.
Fue tras este periodo de tiempo, como veremos a continuación, cuando nuestros protagonistas decidieron adquirir La Maison de Tanger. De alguna manera Alex sintió que quería devolver a la ciudad todo lo que ésta le había dado. Tanger devolvió a Alex la ilusión en una época en la que literalmente él estaba tocando fondo pues consideraba que todo estaba perdido y que nada ya merecía la pena.

Tangier has a lot of movement and an energy that catches. It is always very lively, but being a port city it has that energy of people constantly coming and going. Even for tourist agencies it is a place of transit. And that’s a shame, because I’m not exaggerating if I tell you that three days here could be very short.
Back to the story of our protagonists, when the band returned to Canada after the 3-week tour of Morocco., unfortunately Alex’s father passed away and he felt he needed to go back to Tangier to find himself again. He discussed this with Jeff and what looked like it was initially going to be a few weeks turned into months.
When Jeff came to see him, Alex told him that he had met all kinds of people in what for him became a very special period of his life. The energy of Tangier sometimes leads you to sit down with someone, start talking, and be able to spend the whole afternoon with almost no sense of time passing. He told Jeff that he wanted to bring the band to Tangier in the space of a friend who wanted to turn his house into an artist residency. There they all spent six months together and «Windows in the Sky», Alex’s new album at the time, was born.
It was after this period of time, as we will see below, that our protagonists decided to acquire La Maison de Tanger. Somehow Alex felt that he wanted to give back to the city everything it had given him. Tangier gave Alex his illusion back at a time when he was literally hitting rock bottom because he felt that everything was lost and that nothing was worthwhile anymore.

Sus amigos de Dar Nour les ayudaron en el proceso de búsqueda de este espacio. En pandemia, en la epoca en la que aún no se podía viajar, comenzaron a ver localizaciones haciendo el proceso de forma online. Ya en Junio de 2021 vinieron a ver La Maison de Tanger presencialmente e inmediatamente decidieron que este iba a ser el lugar. Depositaron una señal de dinero y lo sacaron del mercado. Lo tuvieron clarísimo. Habían encontrado una joya.
En este espacio todo gira alrededor de los pequeños detalles y al trato cercano y directo. Su marketing es el boca a boca y el ambiente es muy especial. Creo que esto sucede en los lugares que tienen que ver tan directamente con el mundo de las artes escénicas. El hecho de vivir intensamente y cierta sensibilidad seguramente superior a la media imprimen un sello de caracter que se impregna y proyecta alrededor del espacio.
No es solo una cuestión de las habitaciones o suites, que son amplias, cómodas y algunas de ellas con terraza, o del maravilloso jardín con esa piscina tan instagrameable. O de ese salón con piano y mesas agradables donde puede pararse el tiempo conversando con una copa de vino, sino que es el trato personal y cercano lo que le imprime y dota de mucha personalidad a esta localización.

Their friends from Dar Nour helped them in the process of finding this space. In pandemic, at a time when travel was not yet possible, they started looking at locations by doing the process online. Already in June 2021 they came to see La Maison de Tanger in person and immediately decided that this was going to be the place. They paid a deposit and took the space out of the market. It was clear to them. They had found a jewel.
In this space everything revolves around the small details and the close and direct treatment. Their marketing is word of mouth and the atmosphere is very special. I think this happens in places that have to do so directly with the world of the performing arts. The fact of living intensely and a certain sensibility that is surely above average, stamp a seal of character that permeates and projects around the space.
It is not only a question of the rooms or suites, which are spacious, comfortable and some of them with a terrace, or the wonderful garden with that instagrammable pool. Or that lounge with piano and nice tables where you can stop time chatting over a glass of wine, but it is the personal and close treatment that imprints and gives a lot of personality to this location.

La Maison de Tanger dispone de un maravilloso jardín con piscina de 600 metros cuadrados lleno de vegetación, incluida una parmera centenaria y varios naranjos, una terraza en la azotea, una zona común tipo salón y 5 habitaciones y 3 suites. También hay un hamman y un gimnasio y bajo pedido puedes comer y cenar.

La Maison de Tanger has a wonderful 600 square meter garden with pool full of greenery, including a century-old palm tree and several orange trees, a rooftop terrace, a lounge-like common area and 5 rooms and 3 suites. There is also a hamman and a gym and upon request you can have lunch and dinner.
I share here some photos of the suites and rooms, all of them unique and different, and in the previous paragraph I have left in hyperlink the different areas of the space so you can enter and see everything in more detail.

En palabras de Alex, La Mansion de Tanger es para ellos «una nueva aventura que ofrece un refugio increíblemente conmovedor para cualquiera que busque un lugar para descansar, llorar, reimaginar sus vidas, diseñar o rediseñar su viaje personal y para abrazar la vida, el amor, la amistad y todo aquello con lo que queramos definir nuestras próximas temporadas»
Yo sentí el espacio increíblemente cercano, acogedor, con una mezcla moderna y clásica y con muchísima luz en todos los sentidos. La perfecta definición de hogar fuera de tu hogar y además ubicado a tan solo unos metros del Gran Zoco y por lo tanto de la Medina, de la Kasbah y de todos aquellos lugares por los que es imprescindible que vagues y que te pierdas sin rumbo fijo en tu visita a Tanger, esa ciudad que nos ha fascinado y atrapado a tantos y en la que el tiempo seguramente se te va a a quedar corto.

In Alex’s words, La Mansion de Tangier is for them «a new adventure that offers an incredibly soulful refuge for anyone looking for a place to rest, mourn, reimagine their lives, design or redesign their personal journey and to embrace life, love, friendship and whatever we might want to define our upcoming seasons with».
I felt the space incredibly approachable, cozy, with a modern and classic mix and tons of light in every way. The perfect definition of home away from home and also located just a few meters from the Great Souk and therefore the Medina, the Kasbah and all those places where it is essential that you wander and get lost aimlessly on your visit to Tangier, the city that has fascinated and trapped so many of us and in which time will surely be short.
