A Hidden Gem in Taghazout

I’m here to share great stories and separate the hidden gems from the noise. Some of the links in this article are affiliate links—if you book through them, it won’t cost you anything extra, but it helps give this project a little boost (kind of like buying it a coffee, but way more exciting)

Thanks for the support! Now, let’s dive into this incredible place…

Discover What’s Waiting for You in This Article About Munga Guesthouse

It’s been tough for me to write about Munga Guesthouse because I’m not sure I can capture all its wonderful essence in one article. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s easily in my Top 5 favorite spots. And trust me, I’ve visited a lot of incredible places in my life, thanks to the location services I provide to production companies, agencies, and other businesses, plus that little professional obsession that kicks in when you travel. I’m a huge fan of location scouting and finding charming spaces. But Munga Guesthouse? It’s so much more than that.

In this article, I’ll do my best to share a bit of the energy this place gives off and the amazing décor that surrounds you. I’ll probably fall short, though, because when you’re faced with trying to describe a space like this, it leaves you speechless. And if you’re lucky enough to visit, and you’re someone like me who loves interior design, you’ll find yourself stopping to admire every detail in each corner. Seriously, don’t go in with your eyes half-closed—you’ll miss too much. Even the photos won’t do it justice.

I’ll also share the story of Gabriela and Mounir, the owners of Munga Guesthouse

A special thanks to Rizk for showing me hidden corners of Munga Guesthouse that aren’t even on the website, for his attention to detail, and for everything else he did. Also, shoutout to the whole Munga Guesthouse team, always friendly and with big smiles: waiters, cleaning staff, and reception, Mounir for his kindness, and Gabriela for her warmth and welcoming spirit.

Discover Taghazout: A Surfer's Paradise and Artistic Haven

Note that the only real danger of staying at Munga is getting so enchanted by its beauty that you might not want to leave. But once you step outside, you’ll be welcomed by Taghazout’s magical universe.

Taghazout is a charming little fishing village just 19km north of Agadir, and Munga Guesthouse fits perfectly in this vibrant spot. The village is a surfer’s paradise, with that laid-back, surfer hangout vibe. It’s an artistic place brimming with positive energy, a little hippie, and filled with a sense of freedom. And even if you don’t surf, you’ll love the town—it’s ideal for disconnecting, slowing down, and soaking up its simple, close-knit, carefree, and fun atmosphere.

I’ve read that Taghazout has a millennial energy that captures everyone who visits (and I can definitely attest to that!). Surfers were the first to discover this village in the ‘70s in search of the perfect wave. Today, it’s yogis and artists who have found this paradise to be a peaceful haven.

Munga Guesthouse: A Labor of Love by Mounir and Gabriela

Munga Guesthouse is the result of 14 years of hard work by its owners, Mounir Bouallaq, a professional surfer who has competed both locally and internationally, and his wife Gabriela Matti, a Swiss interior designer who grew up in Brazil, went to high school in Miami, and ran a successful interior design studio in Gstaad.

Gabriela’s natural tendency to move around the world led her to design houses all over the globe, with clients giving her carte blanche due to her impeccable taste. One day, while in Agadir searching for a backgammon set for a project, Gabriela met Mounir. They instantly clicked, and together, they decided to settle in Taghazout. What began as a house they rented, then bought, turned into a warm and welcoming guesthouse. They started decorating it with handmade items for friends who stayed over, and before they knew it, they were running a hotel. Isn’t that a great story?

A Magical Blend of Recycled Materials and Craftsmanship

At Munga, Mounir and Gabriela have created something truly magical, using recycled materials and a lot of creativity. They’ve incorporated lots of wood, stunning Berber village doors (which Mounir spent years hunting for), ironwork, massive tree trunks, driftwood shutters, ropes, and even a boat turned into a bed. Many of these materials were discovered on local beaches and then transformed into pieces of art, adding a unique touch to every corner of the guesthouse.

The space is spread across three buildings, each with beautiful terraces offering incredible sea views. It boasts 18 rooms, including mini suites, suites, and magnums, along with three additional suites that aren’t listed on the website (trust me, discovering these will be a wow moment, or perhaps you’ll get lucky and get upgraded! At Munga, anything can happen). You’ll also find Favela restaurant up on one of the stunning terraces and Munga’s Kitchen downstairs—both perfect spots for a lively bite or a night out, where you’ll find everyone from Taghazout hanging out.

Here are a few of my personal snapshots of Munga’s unique details.

A Look Inside the Unique Rooms of Munga Guesthouse

Munga Guesthouse came to life when, besides friends, people started knocking on Mounir and Gabriela’s door asking if they could rent rooms. That’s when the couple decided to buy the neighboring buildings and begin the journey of creating what is now a warm, cozy, and impeccably detailed space. The name “Munga” is a fusion of the first syllables of their names, as well as Mounir’s surfer nickname.

Each room at Munga Guesthouse is one-of-a-kind, with its own personality, just like the spaces across the three buildings that make up the guesthouse. Mounir, driven by his obsession with Berber thuya wood doors, took up carpentry, and together, they turned the guesthouse into a stunning masterpiece of craftsmanship. When you see the details and realize that everything has been made and overseen by them, it’s clear that a lot of hard work, passion, and love has gone into every inch of this place.

Now, let’s take a peek at a few of the rooms!

The photos below don’t necessarily match the rooms I’ve described, but they’ll give you a glimpse of just how stunning and unique each space at Munga Guesthouse is. Every corner is full of character, creativity, and incredible design details—you’ll see what I mean!

The Moroccan Suite: A Warm and Beautiful Stay

Speechless, right? I’ve had the chance to stay at Munga Guesthouse twice, and both times I experienced two incredible rooms, each with its own unique charm.

Let’s start with the Moroccan Suite. I absolutely loved it. The energy in this room was incredible, and I felt completely at home. The decor was a perfect mix of comfort and style, with colorful lamps, hand-carved wood on antique pillars, and a cozy little living room with low furniture. It was spacious and welcoming, and the vibe at Munga Guesthouse just makes you feel right at ease.

Showers With a View

As many of you know, I’m a bit obsessed with bathrooms, and I have to say, the showers here deserve a solid ten! They’re spacious with great water pressure, and some even offer beach views while you shower. How cool is that? The decor is always on point, using natural materials and zellige tiles that add so much charm.

Sleeping in a Fishing Boat

The second time I stayed at Munga, I had the chance to sleep in one of the most unique beds I’ve ever seen—a retired fishing boat turned into a bed. Taghazout, the charming fishing village where Munga is located, still has around 80 boats that head out into the Atlantic every day. One of these retired boats has found a new life inside Munga, transformed into a stunning and cozy bed. Talk about creative design!

The Magic of Munga’s Rooms

Every room at Munga Guesthouse is unique and super spacious, blending African and Moroccan styles in a way that completely captivates you. If you decide to book your stay here (and I highly recommend it!), don’t stress about picking the best room—each one is just as amazing as the next. I had the pleasure of taking a tour with Munga’s manager, Rizk, and I promise, nothing I saw left me indifferent.

A fun detail in every room: the beds are elevated so that when you wake up, the first thing you see through your window is the stunning view. Nothing is randomly placed here—everything is carefully thought out and designed with intention.

A Home for Surfers, Too

And for the surfers out there, Munga has that authentic surfing vibe. If you’re looking for the perfect wave but want something a little more budget-friendly, there are two cozy dorms where you can stay. It’s the perfect blend of adventure and comfort.

Munga’s Kitchen: The Heart of the Guesthouse

By day, this space serves as Munga’s reception area, but by night, it transforms into Munga’s Kitchen—the go-to spot in Taghazout. I had dinner here one evening, and the atmosphere was just perfect. Guests and visitors alike gather to enjoy a mix of vegan dishes, pasta, pizza, burgers, and more, all in a setting that blends a relaxed beach style with an international vibe. Here, you have a glimpse of this space during the day and at night, capturing its unique charm at different moments.

Rooftop Bliss with Ocean Views

In the same building, you’ll find a rooftop terrace with breathtaking views. It’s the perfect place to unwind, whether you’re sunbathing, reading, or simply enjoying the scenery. There’s even a small pool where you can soak and relax while taking in the beauty of Taghazout from above.

Favela: The Rooftop with a View

Perched at the highest point in all of Taghazout, Favela is the kind of place that makes you fall in love with the village. From here, you can watch the sky transform at sunset, painting the bay with stunning colors. The restaurant serves a mix of traditional and Mediterranean cuisine, featuring fresh local seafood, homemade tapas, and incredible desserts. Everything is prepared fresh each day, so reservations are a must.

This same rooftop area is also where breakfast is served in the mornings—a perfect start to the day with breathtaking views all around.

A Conscious and Sustainable Vision

One thing I haven’t mentioned yet is that Mounir and Gabriela are avid travelers, drawing much of their inspiration from their journeys. However, Taghazout remains their home base, where Munga Guesthouse stands as a testament to their vision.

Munga is not only a guesthouse but a conscious, ecological, and sustainable project. The electricity comes from solar panels, and efforts to minimize plastic use are encouraged. While large hotel chains are just beginning to take steps in this direction, Mounir and Gabriela’s vision has been rooted in sustainability from the very start.

Beyond the guesthouse, they are deeply involved in giving back to the local community—whether it’s renovating the home of a disabled neighbor, restoring the neighborhood, finding homes for stray dogs, or creating spaces for the village’s youth to connect and thrive.

And once you step out through those beautiful doors scattered throughout the space, what awaits you? Well, a magical universe, of course – Taghazout is full of surprises!

Enhance Your Stay at Munga

You can complement your experience here with surf lessons, safaris, yoga, fishing, horseback and camel rides, and even golf.

Munga doesn’t rely on paid marketing—their best advertising comes from word of mouth and the guests who become their greatest ambassadors. And I can’t help but agree. My experience was unforgettable, and I left feeling completely relaxed and in love with the place. The feeling stayed with me for days.

A huge thank you to the entire Munga team and its owners for making my stay an unforgettable memory.
