Building Community: Selina Agafay and the story of a Digital Nomad
ESP – Si vas a pasar unos días en Marrakech, tienes que dedicar uno o varios días a conocer Agafay, un impresionante paisaje desértico de colinas áridas a tan solo unos 45 minutos de Marrakech. Aquí la luz es especial y podrás contemplar unos amaneceres que te cortarán la respiración y relajarte con unos atardeceres hipnóticos.
Siguiendo con las localizaciones y espacios que visité en mi último viaje a Marruecos, hoy nos teletransportamos al desierto más cercano a Marrakech para conocer la filosofía de Selina y el camp que la marca tiene en Agafay. Para ello os cuento cómo fue mi estancia en Selina Nomad Camp Agafay y entrevisto a una nómada digital con una historia super interesante que está residiendo y trabajando allí por un tiempo, Sofía Kakkava

Continuing with the locations and spaces I visited on my last trip to Morocco, today we teleport to the desert closest to Marrakech to learn about the philosophy of Selina and to know the camp that the brand has in Agafay. For this I tell you how was my stay at Selina Nomad Camp Agafay and I interview a digital nomad with a super interesting story who is working and living there for a while, Sofia Kakkava.

Hace poco tiempo sugerí el desierto de Agafay a una productora como potencial localización para celebrar una Convención de empresa. A raíz de esto, hice un estudio exhaustivo de los camps existentes en esta localización. Desde mi punto de vista y experiencia, puedo deciros que cada camp existente en Agafay está orientado a un target o a un tipo de público distinto. Esa fue mi conclusión.

ENG – Which location should you choose to spend one or several days in the Agafay Desert?
A short time ago I suggested the Agafay desert to a production company as a potential location to hold a company convention. As a result of this, I made an exhaustive study of the existing camps in this location. From my point of view and experience, I can tell you that each existing camp in Agafay is oriented to a different target or type of audience. That was my conclusion.
This time I wanted to get to know Selina Nomad Camp Agafay staying there and another camp that I will tell you about in another post.

ESP- Llegas a Selina Agafay Nomad Camp en un recorrido de unos 40 minutos en coche desde Marrakech.
Según haces el check-in en el camp, te invitan a unirte a su comunidad para conectar con otros viajeros a través de un grupo de WhatsApp en el cuál podrás estar al día de las actividades diarias que te ofrecen y conectar así mismo con otros viajeros.
Todos los días hay una copa de bienvenida en The View, la zona común del camp para conocer a los huéspedes recién llegados y diariamente y si así lo deseas, tienes la posibilidad de realizar actividades como ATV Quad Ride, Camel Ride, Buggy Ride, hogueras nocturnas o meditaciones matutinas, por tan solo nombrar algunos ejemplos, porque el programa de Selina Agafay es super completo.
Para los que se queden en el camp más días, hay posibilidades de excursiones al Valle de Ourika o a las cascadas de Oudzoud, posibilidad de montar en globo, workshops de meditación, mindfulness o diferentes tipos de Yoga, masajes etc. Todos los planes aquí

ENG- You arrive at Selina Agafay Nomad Camp in a 40-minute drive from Marrakech.
As you check-in at the camp, you are invited to join their community to connect with other travelers through a WhatsApp group where you can keep up to date with the daily activities they offer and connect with other travelers.
Every day there is a welcome drink in The View, the common area of the camp to meet the newly arrived guests and daily and if you wish, you have the possibility to do activities such as ATV Quad Ride, Camel Ride, Buggy Ride, night bonfires or morning meditations, just to name a few examples, because Selina Agafay’s program is super complete.
For those who stay in the camp for more days, there are possibilities of excursions to the Ourika Valley or to the Oudzoud waterfalls, balloon rides, meditation workshops, mindfulness or different types of Yoga, massages, etc. All plans here
ESP- En el camp, acorde con la filosofía de Selina, hay diferentes tipos de tiendas y habitaciones, tanto privadas como compartidas.
Yo me alojé en una tienda glamping con baño, ducha, aire acondicionado-calefacción, una Nespresso, escritorio, televisión, decoración preciosa y piscina privada. No sabéis lo que es ver atardecer o despertar y ver amanecer desde aquí. Los colores del cielo son maravillosos.
Si sientes que no quieres conectar y prefieres privacidad o unos días de desconexión, aquí también estás en el lugar indicado. Muchas de las tiendas están aisladas y con la suficiente distancia unas de otras como para sentirte en soledad si es eso lo que vas buscando.
Por cierto, el wifi funciona estupendamente alrededor de todo el camp. Yo tuve que hacer cosas de trabajo el día que estuve y la conectividad es excelente.

ENG- In the camp, according to Selina’s philosophy, there are different types of tents and rooms, both private and shared.
I stayed in a glamping tent with bathroom, shower, air conditioning-heating, a Nespresso, desk, TV, beautiful decoration and private pool. You don’t know what it’s like to watch the sunset or wake up and see the sunrise from here. The colors of the sky are wonderful.
If you feel you don’t want to connect and prefer privacy or a few days of disconnection, you’re in the right place here too. Many of the tents are isolated and far enough away from each other to feel solitary if that’s what you’re looking for.
By the way, the wifi works great all around the camp. I had to do some work stuff the day I was there and the connectivity is excellent.

ESP- Me hubiera quedado muchos más días en este camp, la vibra es muy especial, pero como tenía que visitar otros espacios en este viaje, decidí conectar con Sofia Kakkava y entrevistarla para seguir empapándome de la filosofía y de los valores de Selina. Ella es un claro exponente de este concepto al que como véis, me quedé enganchada (Es fácil que esto suceda, es un estilo de vida que atrapa)
Sofia es una nómada digital a tiempo completo que lleva un tiempo en Selina Agafay Nomad Camp impartiendo diferentes programas de wellness y coaching. Estuvo como huésped en el camp en Septiembre del año pasado y posteriormente la llamaron para impartir talleres de coaching transformacionales a los huéspedes y nómadas digitales de Selina Agafay durante un tiempo: talleres de abundancia y de amor propio, rituales de luna nueva, ceremonias de luna llena, consciencia y entrenamientos de cuerpo y mente.

ENG- I would have stayed many more days in this camp, the vibe is very special, but as I had to visit other spaces on this trip, I decided to connect with Sofia Kakkava and interview her to continue soaking in Selina´s philosophy and values. She is a clear exponent of this concept to which, as you can see, I got hooked (It’s easy for this to happen, it’s a lifestyle that catches)
Sofia is a full time digital nomad who has been at Selina Agafay Nomad Camp for a while now, teaching different wellness and coaching programs. She was a guest at the camp in September last year and was subsequently called to teach transformational coaching workshops to the guests and digital nomads of Selina Agafay for a period of time: abundance and self-love workshops, new moon rituals, full moon ceremonies, mindfulness and mind and body trainings.

ESP- Sofía actualmente tiene 31 años y originariamente es griega, pero se considera una ciudadana del mundo. Su pasión por la mente y el comportamiento humano la llevaron a graduarse en psicología en Atenas y a realizar posteriormente un master en coaching ejecutivo y liderazgo en la Universidad de Londres. También allí aprendió sobre la gestión de recursos humanos. Posteriormente se mudó a Ámsterdam para experimentar lo que sería su primera experiencia corporativa y estudiar un MBA de Dirección de empresas.
Tras trabajar con organizaciones internacionales y vivir en Ámsterdam 5 años, decidió que había mucha felicidad potencial en el hecho de poder vivir siendo libre y fundó su propio negocio de coaching online, donde entrena tu mente y te ayuda a convertirte en una mejor versión de ti mismo, a encontrar tu propósito, a abandonar y dejar ir tus limitaciones, a desbloquear tus talentos y te inspira para que puedas vivir un estilo de vida de libertad. ENG- Sofia is now 31 years old and is originally from Greece, but considers herself a citizen of the world. Her passion for the mind and human behavior led her to pursue a degree in psychology in Athens and later a master’s degree in executive coaching and leadership at the University of London. There she also learned about human resource management. She then moved to Amsterdam to experience what would be her first corporate experience and study for an MBA in Management.
After working with international organizations and living in Amsterdam for 5 years, she decided that there was a lot of potential happiness in being able to live free and founded her own online coaching business, where she trains your mind and helps you become a better version of yourself, find your purpose, let go of your limitations, unlock your talents and inspires you to live a lifestyle of freedom. ESP- Sofía comenzó a experimentar con el trabajo remoto en 2018. Lo hizo pasito a pasito y no todo de golpe. Experimentó primero en lugares como Malta, Suiza, Italia o Dubai intercalando periodos de tiempo.
En 2022 decidió convertirse en nómada digital a tiempo completo. Estuvo 7 meses en América Central y Sudamérica: Mexico, Costa Rica, Brasil, Panama, Colombia…A esto añadió Marruecos, España y Tanzania, por nombrar algunos ejemplos. En este año trabajó desde 11 países, 6 de los cuales fueron nuevos y tuvo 17 intercambios y saltos de países.
Experiencias como estar en Río de Janeiro durante el carnaval, aprender español, disfrutar de la selva amazónica, sacarse la licencia de buceo, bañarse en el plancton brillante de Colombia por la noche, hacer su primer safari o experimentar la caza con una de las últimas tribus cazadoras-recolectoras del sudeste africano son algunos de sus hits en este año pasado. A la vez ha acogido más de 500 workshops y sesiones de coaching, tanto online como presenciales. Todo lo que ha podido experimentar y vivir era uno de sus sueños y aspiraciones personales y como ella misma comenta, está prearada y dispuesta para brillar más todavía y expandir ese brillo a cuantas mas vidas y empresas sea posible en este 2023

ENG- Sofia started experimenting with remote work in 2018. She did it step by step and not all at once. She experimented first in places like Malta, Switzerland, Italy or Dubai interspersed with time periods.
In 2022, she decided to become a full-time digital nomad. She spent 7 months in Central and South America: Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Panama, Colombia… To this she added Morocco, Spain and Tanzania, to name a few. In this year she worked from 11 countries, 6 of which were new and had 17 exchanges and country hopping.
Experiences such as being in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, learning Spanish, enjoying the Amazon rainforest, getting her diving license, bathing in the glowing plankton of Colombia at night, going on his first safari or experiencing hunting with one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Southeast Africa are some of her hits in this past year. At the same time she has hosted more than 500 workshops and coaching sessions, both online and in person. Everything she has been able to experience and live was one of her personal dreams and aspirations and as she herself says, she is ready and willing to shine even brighter and expand that glitter to as many lives and companies as possible in 2023.

ESP- Sofía también organiza y dirige retiros en privado, eso fue lo que la llevó a Selina Agafay, ya que algunos clientes la habían preguntado por esa posibilidad y ella consideró que Agafay era el lugar adecuado para esto.
Al ser ella una nómada digital con una parte importante de su negocio online, busca siempre lugares que tengan una conexión a internet confiable y a ser posible espacios de co-working. En Selina Agafay la buena conectividad está garantizado, como ya he mencionado anteriormente. Adicionalmente, Selina Agafay dispone de espacios de co-working, aunque sinceramente y en mi opinión, desde tu propia tienda se puede también trabajar estupendamente.
Sofía se enamoró de esta localización desde que la conoció y experimentó como huesped . Le parece que el camp está lleno de paz y una vez que se instaló para trabajar, opina que el entorno ayuda a crear una rutina diaria para meditar, para fijarse metas o para trabajar entrenando tu mente.

ENG- Sofia also organizes and leads private retreats, that’s what lead her to Selina Agafay, as some clients had asked her about that possibility and she considered Agafay to be the right place for this.
Being a digital nomad with an important part of her business online, she always looks for places that have a reliable internet connection and if possible co-working spaces. At Selina Agafay good connectivity is guaranteed, as I mentioned before. Additionally, Selina Agafay has co-working spaces, although honestly and in my opinion, from your own tent you can also work great.
Sofia fell in love with this location since she met and experienced it as a guest. She finds the camp to be full of peace and once she settled in for work, she finds that the environment helps to create a daily routine to meditate, to set goals or to work on training your mind.
ESP- Al preguntarle a Sofía cuáles creían que eran los puntos que diferenciaban a Selina Agafay de la competencia de alrededor, ella lo tuvo claro: este camp es más frecuentado por locales que otros camps de Agafay cuya orientación quizá es más turística. Esto es estupendo ya que puedes conectar también con locales y no solo con turistas.
En mi opinión, a este importante punto, hay que añadirle el hecho del esfuerzo que pone el equipo de Selina Agafay en generar y construir comunidad y en impulsar conexiones para que te vayas del lugar teniendo la sensación de haber tenido una experiencias significativa. Esto es muy característico de la filosofía Selina.
Para Sofía, Selina Agafay Nomad Camp es perfecto para gente que quiera relajarse, reducir el ritmo o desconectar. En el desierto todo es más calmado. Parejas, grupos de amigos o nómadas digitales solos son los perfiles que yo pude ver más en este campamento. Sofía coincide conmigo en identificar este perfil.

ENG- When I asked Sofia what she thought were the points that set Selina Agafay apart from the surrounding competition, she was clear: this camp is more frequented by locals than other camps in Agafay which are perhaps more tourist oriented. This is great as you can also connect with locals and not just tourists.
In my opinion, to this important point, you have to add the fact that the Selina Agafay team puts a lot of effort into generating and building community and in fostering connections so that you leave the place with the feeling os having had a meaningful experience. This is very characteristic of the Selina philosophy.
For Sofia, Selina Agafay Nomad Camp is perfect for people who want to relax, slow down or disconnect. In the desert everything is calmer. Couples, groups of friends or solo digital nomads are the profiles that I could see more in this camp. Sofia agrees with me in identifying this profile.
