Fonduco: A Different Way to Experience Menorca
I have a soft spot for old fishermen’s houses by the water. There is something about their simplicity, their connection to the sea and their place within a real local community that I find hard to resist. Fonduco, in Mahón, turned out to be one of my favourite places to stay during my recent trip to Menorca.
Rather than a conventional hotel room, Fonduco is a traditional Menorcan fishermen’s house right on the harbour. Spread across four floors, it has a character that feels very different from staying in a hotel, with the water and the everyday life of the harbour becoming part of the experience.
What I particularly liked was how naturally the house fits into its surroundings. This is not a property designed to recreate a Mediterranean aesthetic. It is an actual fishermen’s house in a traditional neighbourhood, with the kind of location and views that make you want to spend more time at home than you originally planned.
For me, that is the appeal of Fonduco. It combines the character of a traditional house with the simple pleasure of waking up by the water, opening the windows and enjoying Menorca at your own pace.

A Quiet Corner of Mahón Harbour
Fonduco sits by the Moll del Fonduco, in one of the traditional fishing neighbourhoods around the port of Mahón. It is an inhabited area with a distinctly local feel, where the houses stand close to the water and the maritime character of the neighbourhood is still very much part of everyday life.
And then there is the harbour itself. Port Mahón is so vast that, from certain viewpoints, the water seems to stretch out like the open sea. You are in the middle of a working, lived-in harbour, yet the scale of the landscape gives you an extraordinary sense of space.
I loved this combination of things. You have the charm of a small fishermen’s neighbourhood, the boats and the waterfront right outside, and the feeling of being somewhere with a strong identity of its own. It is a different side of Menorca from the island’s famous coves and beach resorts, and one that I think deserves more attention.
Another thing I appreciated was how easy it felt to settle into the neighbourhood. This is a place where people live, rather than an area created exclusively for visitors. The harbour is part of the daily scenery, and there is something lovely about experiencing Menorca from this perspective.
The location also makes it possible to enjoy the waterfront and explore the wider harbour area without needing to drive everywhere. For me, that is part of what makes Fonduco such an appealing base in Mahón.
My Little House by the Water
One of the things that makes staying at Fonduco different is that you have an entire house rather than a conventional hotel room.
The house is arranged over four floors, with two double bedrooms, a single bedroom, two bathrooms and two additional toilets. There is also a kitchen and living area, a terrace and a rooftop from which to enjoy the views.
What I particularly liked was the way the different levels give you different perspectives of the harbour. The house feels connected to the water throughout, but the experience changes as you move from one floor to another.
The bedroom with its large window overlooking the harbour was one of my favourite details. I love waking up somewhere where the view is an essential part of the room, rather than something you have to go outside to find. Here, the water is right there, framed by the window and woven into the experience of staying in the house.
There is also something I find especially appealing about the architecture of traditional fishermen’s houses. They are not necessarily grand or elaborate, but they have a sense of place that is difficult to reproduce. Fonduco has that quality, and I think it is one of the reasons I enjoyed staying here so much.
It is the kind of house where you quickly stop thinking of yourself as a hotel guest. You make yourself a coffee, open the windows, settle into the space and start to feel at home.
Rooftop Mornings and Harbour Views
If I had to choose one part of Fonduco that I enjoyed most, it would probably be the rooftop.
I loved having breakfast up there in the morning, with the harbour spread out in front of me. It was also the perfect place to spend some time working, enjoying the early light and taking in the views before heading out to explore the island.
The mornings were particularly special. There is something about watching the day begin over the water that makes even the simplest routine feel different. Instead of rushing out for breakfast or looking for somewhere to sit with my laptop, I could stay at home and enjoy the surroundings.
And the rooftop is not just somewhere to stop for a few photographs. It is a space you can genuinely use and enjoy, whether you want to have breakfast, read, work for a while or simply sit and look out across the harbour.
For me, these are the details that make a stay memorable. It is not always about having more facilities or a longer list of amenities. Sometimes, having a beautiful place to sit in the morning, with an extraordinary view and nowhere you need to be just yet, is more than enough.
At Fonduco, I found myself wanting to make the most of those moments rather than rushing through them.
The Simple Pleasure of Living by the Sea
The rooftop may have been my favourite spot, but I also loved the living and kitchen area on the second floor.
Open the terrace windows wide and the harbour becomes part of the room. The views are wonderful, and I particularly liked the feeling of being able to cook, have a coffee or simply spend time inside while remaining so connected to the water outside.
This is one of the advantages of staying in a house rather than a hotel. You have the freedom to organise your day around your own routines. You can make breakfast whenever you want, work for a while, open the windows and enjoy the view without having to go anywhere.
At Fonduco, even ordinary moments felt a little different because of the setting. Cooking with the windows open, looking out towards the harbour or spending a quiet morning at home became part of the experience of Menorca itself.
And that is something I particularly value when I travel. I want to discover a destination, but I also want to experience what it feels like to spend time there. Having a house in a traditional neighbourhood, right by the water, gives you a different relationship with the place.
Fonduco is not about a long list of hotel facilities or organised experiences. Its appeal lies in the house itself, the views, the neighbourhood and the freedom to enjoy them in your own way.
Would I Stay at Fonduco Again?
Absolutely. Fonduco was one of the places I enjoyed most during my recent trip to Menorca, and it reminded me why I am so drawn to traditional houses with a strong connection to their surroundings.
I loved the fishermen’s house itself, the enormous harbour views and the simple pleasure of being able to start the day on the rooftop. I also appreciated the location in a traditional neighbourhood, away from the more conventional idea of a holiday stay.
I think Fonduco is particularly appealing if, like me, you prefer places with character over standard hotel rooms. It works well for travellers who appreciate having their own space, enjoy being close to the water and want to experience Mahón from a more local perspective.
For me, the best part was how naturally the house became part of my everyday routine. Breakfast on the rooftop, working with the harbour in front of me and opening the windows while cooking were some of the moments I remember most.
Would I recommend it? Definitely, especially if you have a soft spot for old fishermen’s houses and places that feel genuinely connected to their surroundings.
There are many beautiful places to stay in Menorca, but Fonduco offers something quite specific: the chance to make a traditional house by the harbour your own for a few days.
And I think that is a lovely way to experience the island.
