Ibiza and Formentera: Hidden Beaches and Secret Coves

Escape the Crowds: Discover the Best of Ibiza and Formentera’s Secret Spots

Not long ago, I shared a beautiful hidden cove in Ibiza and suggested visiting it off-season to experience it at its fullest. When it comes to a traditional vacation, it’s true that there are still areas of Ibiza that remain peaceful during the summer season. However, this idea is especially suited to those who choose to rent cottages or apartments in the more secluded corners of the island, where privacy is key.

That being said, during peak summer season, when you want to visit a well-known cove or explore some of the island’s famous spots, the experience can change dramatically. One great way to enjoy the islands is by exploring them from the water—whether it’s by sailboat or catamaran, both offering access to secluded coves and hidden beaches.

You’ll also find that, in some cases, experiencing the Pitiusas by sea can be just as affordable, if not more, than traveling by land, especially when you choose the right option for your journey.

Have You Considered Exploring Ibiza and Formentera by Sailboat or Catamaran?

If you’ve ever dreamed of discovering Ibiza and Formentera by sailboat, I can tell you it’s one of the most unforgettable experiences. I’ve had the privilege of exploring these islands by sailboat for three summers, and I highly recommend it: there’s no better way to discover hidden coves and stunning landscapes.

I can recommend expert skippers who know the islands’ best-kept secrets. The skippers I work with are exceptional guides who tailor each journey to your personal preferences. Whether you want to learn basic navigation skills, relax on the bow soaking up the sun, or explore different parts of the islands, everything can be customized. They know where to anchor away from the crowds, and they’ll share their local knowledge with you as you sail.

If you choose to embark on this adventure, there are various route options. If you’re familiar with Ibiza and Formentera, you can discuss alternative itineraries with the skipper. If you’re new to the islands, they will recommend the best routes to make sure your experience is as authentic as possible.

Throughout this post, I’ll share some suggested routes and how an ideal week of sailing around the most exclusive coves of Ibiza and Formentera could look. Additionally, if you ever feel like exploring other destinations in the future, such as Cádiz, Portugal, or Galicia, there are also options for private groups.

Whether you set sail from the port of Denia or directly from Ibiza, the adventure begins as you leave the familiar behind and head into the tranquil Mediterranean.

As you embark, the excitement builds, and by midday, you’ll sail towards Cala D´Hort, with the iconic Es Vedrá looming majestically in the distance. The first night is spent anchoring in this peaceful cove, under the stars, where you can feel the magic of the island.

Day 2: Exploring Cala Conta’s Crystal Waters
On the second day, the route leads to Cala Conta. Here, the expertise of your skipper is essential, as the waters deepen and the route requires a local’s knowledge. Cala Conta is renowned for its transparent waters and the vibrant hues of its seabed. After some snorkeling, you can head ashore to the famous Sunset Ashram, where you can witness one of the island’s most breathtaking sunsets.

The Rest of Your Journey: Tailored to You

Exploring the Hidden Coves of Ibiza

As you journey through Ibiza, you’ll discover a series of magical coves, each offering a unique experience. The beauty of this adventure lies in its flexibility – you can tailor your itinerary to your mood, whether you want to spend the morning basking in the sun at one cove or linger longer in a place that feels truly special.

Cala Bassa: A Serene Escape

One of the hidden gems within the Bay of San Antonio is the stunning Cala Bassa. With its crystal-clear waters, enchanting caves, and rocky formations, this cove is a paradise for nature lovers. You can take a zodiac to explore the area or simply unwind beneath the pine trees surrounding the beach, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Nearby, you’ll find the vibrant port of Sant Antonio, a perfect spot to replenish supplies or take a refreshing shower.

The Magic of San Antonio

San Antonio is a lively destination, but its bustling atmosphere can be a bit much for those seeking tranquility. Here, you can anchor your boat with a buoy, an affordable and convenient alternative to docking at the port. And if you’re in the mood for some island exploration, a zodiac service is available 24 hours a day to bring you back to your boat whenever you’re ready.

For a taste of the iconic Ibiza vibe, you can visit the legendary Café del Mar. Watch talented musicians, fire jugglers, and street performers as you enjoy the sunset over the water. If you prefer a quieter experience, you can soak it all in from your boat and continue your journey.

Exploring the Northern Wonders of Ibiza

Cala Salada & Cala Saladeta: Hidden Beauties
As you sail northwest, your first stop takes you to Cala Salada, a stunning cove where anchoring is restricted to preserve the delicate Posidonia. Despite the restrictions, its beauty is undeniable, offering tranquil waters and a peaceful ambiance. From here, you can take a scenic stone pathway to Cala Saladeta, a more secluded and serene spot, perfect for those seeking solitude and natural beauty.

Isla Margarita: A Diver’s Paradise
Continuing your journey northwest, you’ll reach Isla Margarita, also known as Ses Margalides, a paradise for divers. This small island, with its striking rocky formations and crystal-clear waters, is ideal for a refreshing swim. As the sun sets, the view from this spot becomes even more magical, creating a picture-perfect moment that will stay with you long after the day ends.

Northern Coves & Hidden Treasures

Port de San Miguel: A Hidden Sanctuary
Port de San Miguel is a quiet, sheltered cove, perfect for a peaceful night at anchor. Protected from most winds, it offers a safe haven for those who want to experience Ibiza’s more tranquil side. While here, make sure to visit the charming chiringuito by Cala Sa Ferradura, where you can sip a cold beer while enjoying the stunning view of Illa des Bosc, home to one of the most exclusive villas on the island, where the elite come to stay.

Cova d’en Marçà & Benirrás: Hidden Treasures
Not far from Port de San Miguel, the Cova d’en Marçà awaits. This ancient cave, often overlooked, holds secrets that date back more than 100,000 years – a fascinating journey into the island’s rich history. A short distance away is Benirrás, a breathtaking bay shaped like a “U” and bordered by steep cliffs and lush pine trees. The crystal-clear waters make it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings. On Sundays, the rhythm of drums fills the air, adding a special touch to the already magical sunset experience.

Sailing Through Ibiza’s Hidden Gems

Cala Es Canaret: A Tranquil Oasis

Continuing your journey, you’ll discover the serene beauty of Cala Es Canaret, a true gem with crystal-clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere. This secluded cove, once part of a lush pine forest, was impacted by the devastating fire that affected much of the northern coastline near Benirrás. Slowly, the area is regenerating, and its natural beauty is gradually returning, offering a glimpse of the island’s resilience and charm.

Cala Xarraca: A Hidden Paradise

Next, set sail toward Cala Xarraca, one of the most stunning and least known coves on the island. Its vast and unspoiled nature makes it a true hidden treasure, especially when approached by sea. The underwater world here is a diver’s dream, with vibrant marine life and crystal-clear waters. On the starboard side, you’ll find a perfect spot for snorkeling, where the rich colors of the ocean floor are simply mesmerizing.

Cala Portinatx: Ibiza’s Northern Beauty

Further north, Cala Portinatx and its surrounding coves await. Located at the farthest tip of Ibiza, these peaceful, untouched beaches are among the island’s most beautiful. With soft sands, calm waters, and a tranquil atmosphere, this area is perfect for those seeking an escape from the crowds and a more intimate connection with nature.

Sailing to Formentera: A Day of Discovery

As you sail towards the idyllic island of Formentera, you’ll have the option to anchor at Illetes or venture ashore to explore its charming streets or enjoy a lovely dinner by the sea. If you’re in the mood for a unique experience, you might want to visit the mud baths—although some experienced sailors recommend skipping them due to the sulfur content. The island’s clear waters are perfect for a refreshing swim, and the hidden gem of Espalmador awaits with its pristine, transparent waters, ideal for snorkeling or simply relaxing on the beach.
