Off the Beaten Path: Beyond the Tourist Traps

Exploring Authentic Cultural Journeys and Unique Travel Experiences Around the World

Travelling with Strangers: My First Trip to Cuba

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by cultures that preserve their roots, where folklore, traditions, and history form the backbone of everyday life. This fascination has taken me across the globe, seeking out the authentic soul of each destination, beyond what is typically shown in guidebooks or travel blogs.

While I’ve always been drawn to the vibrant rhythms of Afro-Cuban culture, it’s a love that transcends borders. From the indigenous rituals in the Amazon to the ancient traditions in the highlands of Ethiopia, there’s something profoundly moving about experiencing the true cultural essence of a place. These kinds of journeys are often hidden in plain sight, waiting to be uncovered by those who dare to look beyond the surface.

The Power of Authentic Connections

During my travels, I’ve discovered that the best way to tap into these authentic experiences is through personal connections and niche travel platforms. It’s not always about following the crowd; often, the most meaningful moments are found when you step off the beaten path and connect directly with locals who can show you the stories, music, and traditions that define a place.

One such moment came during my time in Cuba when I visited Raíces Profundas, a community project that celebrates Afro-Cuban heritage through music, dance, and storytelling. The moment I stepped into that space, I felt as though I was witnessing something far beyond a performance. It was a deeply personal and emotional experience, reminding me why these types of journeys are so powerful—they go beyond tourism and become a way to connect with the heart of a culture.

However, finding these experiences isn’t always easy. The barriers to truly experiencing a place’s culture can be many: language, accessibility, and the overwhelming choice of mass tourism options. But overcoming these challenges is exactly what makes these journeys so special. It’s when you step outside your comfort zone, do a little more research, and forge connections with locals that you unlock the true spirit of a destination.

The Magic of Tailor-Made Travel: A Journey Beyond the Ordinary

That first trip to Cuba, whether with strangers or not, would have never been what I had envisioned unless I had sat down with someone, explained my idea, and found a person who could not only understand it but also help me bring it to life. Planning a journey like this is no simple feat—it’s incredibly niche, after all.

For example, as I told you before, my fascination with Afro-Cuban folklore led me to the Raíces Profundas Folkloric Company in Cuba. This isn’t an experience you’ll find in a typical travel agency package. It’s about more than just visiting; it’s about seeing them rehearse, feeling their energy on stage, exploring their semi-ruined yet magical building, and learning about Afro-Cuban religion, the Orishas, and Santería. All of this resonates deeply with me.

Experiences like these don’t just happen by chance. They require intention, curiosity, and a willingness to go beyond traditional travel frameworks. When your interests are this specific, only a personalized, tailor-made approach can get you there. And that’s where the true essence of cultural travel lies—not in generic itineraries, but in the pursuit of something authentic, meaningful, and real.

Navigating Cuba’s "Picaresca" with Trust

In Cuba, as in many other countries, there’s a certain level of “picaresca.” This is a kind of crafty, playful trickery. It often stems from a mix of social and political factors, and I’m not here to judge. It happens in many places around the world. But what’s the best way to navigate this aspect of travel? Simple—put yourself in the hands of someone you can trust. Someone who has your back. This way, you won’t get swindled, misled, or taken advantage of. That’s the key to a smooth, stress-free journey.

Lessons from Varadero and Finding Hidden Gems

Getting back to the main point, my first trip to Cuba wasn’t a disaster. In fact, I loved it. I spent almost a month exploring the island, discovering many non-touristic spots. But looking back, I realize I might have spent the first eight days differently if I had known a few things in advance. For example, I was adamant about avoiding Varadero. I had a preconceived notion about the typical tourist who stays at resorts in that area. They seem isolated from the true Cuba. I thought I knew what to expect: people who book the classic Habana-Varadero package and never really experience the island’s authentic culture.

However, as I dug a little deeper with the help of locals, I found a different side to Varadero. Beyond the resorts, there are legendary parties in this seemingly touristy paradise. These gatherings are only accessible to locals and rarely seen by foreigners. It was a valuable lesson. Sometimes, you have to look past the stereotypes and be open to finding hidden gems, even in the most unlikely places.

So, what should have been my starting point when planning this journey? The answer was right in front of me. I was inspired by a film that marked me deeply: Habana Blues.

Why? Because from the moment I saw it, I knew how much I valued music, particularly the alternative music scene depicted in the film. It struck a chord with me. Since then, it became one of my all-time favorite movies. That was the kind of experience I wanted—immersing myself in Cuba’s rich musical culture. If I had started with that in mind, I might have crafted a different, more authentic journey from the very beginning.

In the next post, we’ll wrap up this Cuban series with a final conclusion.
