A Different Side of Morocco
If you’ve been to Morocco before, you probably know how vibrant and fast-paced some cities can be. But there’s another side to this country, one that feels entirely different: the southern Atlantic coast. Here, no one will try to sell you anything, and there’s a certain calmness in the air. The people have a different energy, and so does the sea. It’s the perfect place to slow down, disconnect, and soak in Morocco’s raw coastal beauty.
Whether you’re looking for an immersive surf experience or a journey that blends the desert with the most stunning coastal towns, here are two travel inspirations that might spark your wanderlust.

Finding the Perfect Wave: The Surfer’s Escape
If you’ve ever been drawn to the surf lifestyle—the rhythm of the waves, the salty air, and that endless pursuit of the perfect swell—there’s no better place to experience it than Morocco’s southern coast. Hidden from the crowds, this region is a haven for seasoned surfers and beginners alike.
One of the most special spots is Sidi Ifni, an old Spanish enclave with white and blue colonial-style houses, where the sound of the ocean is constant. This area is home to powerful waves, quiet beaches, and an authentic surf scene. You’ll find yourself paddling out in breathtaking locations like Legzira, known for its dramatic red rock arches, or Mirleft, where the Atlas Mountains meet the ocean, creating a wild and untamed coastline.
Mirleft has that unmistakable bohemian and hippie vibe that draws musicians, artists, and free spirits. It’s a place where time slows down, creativity flows as freely as the tide, and life revolves around the ocean. Here, the Atlas Mountains meet the Atlantic, creating a rugged yet peaceful landscape that invites both adventure and relaxation.
Beyond the surf, this is a land of slow mornings and long sunsets. Think freshly caught fish served at secret little spots known only by locals, endless cups of mint tea after a day in the water, and the kind of tranquility that only a place like this can offer.

From Morocco’s Heart to the Atlantic Coast
If you’re drawn to a mix of landscapes, there’s a journey that will take you from the golden dunes of the Sahara to the endless blues of the Atlantic. Imagine crossing the High Atlas Mountains, passing through Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate before reaching the vast, empty spaces of the Draa Valley and the Sahara. The Draa Valley, with its dramatic kasbahs, lush palm groves, and silent oases, offers a peaceful escape from the usual tourist trail. From here, the road turns westward, tracing a path along the coastline through Sidi Ifni, Mirleft, and Legzira. This section of Morocco’s coast is dotted with rugged beaches and hidden coves, where you can enjoy both adventure and serenity.
Once you continue northward, you’ll encounter the bohemian coastal towns of Taghazout, Imsouane, and Essaouira—each with its own unique character. Taghazout, once a quiet fishing village, is now a laid-back surf haven known for its vibrant community of travelers and creatives. Whether you’re a surfer looking for the perfect wave or a wanderer seeking a relaxed vibe, Taghazout has something for everyone. Further up the coast, Imsouane is famed for having the longest wave in Morocco, an endless, mellow ride that’s perfect for surfers of all levels. And Essaouira, often referred to as the ‘Wind City of Africa,’ has long attracted artists, musicians, and free spirits. Its rich history, mixed with the sound of waves and the rhythm of Gnawa music, creates an unforgettable atmosphere.
This route is a dream for those who love the open road, ever-changing scenery, and the feeling of moving between two worlds—the silent dunes of the desert and the crashing waves of the ocean.
