A Hidden Coastal Gem
Discovering Azalaï Life Experience: Hidden Gems on Morocco’s Atlantic Coast
A few days ago, I returned from my stay at two stunning Azalaï Life Experience locations along Morocco’s Atlantic Coast. Azalaï offers a unique concept with five extraordinary spots, and I look forward to exploring all of them soon. As you read on, you’ll discover the core values behind Azalaï’s philosophy.
On this trip, I had the pleasure of staying at Azalaï Beach Cottage and Azyar Ocean Lodge, and I also visited the site of Azalaï Beach Camp, which operates seasonally. These hidden gems are some of the best-kept secrets in the area.
Located just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from both Marrakech and Casablanca, these places are secluded treasures, far from the usual tourist routes. Trust me, it’s a well-hidden secret among the locals.
In this post, I’ll take you through the story of Bouchaib Harmouzi, the founder of Azalaï Life Experience, as well as the concept and philosophy behind it. I’ll also dive into the unique charm of Azalaï Beach Cottage, a space so beautifully designed that at times it feels like you’ve been transported from Morocco to the English countryside, the French Riviera, or even the Caribbean, depending on where you are on the property.

The Heart of Azalaï: Embracing Warmth and Hospitality
Waking up to the vibrant colors and breathtaking views at Azalaï Beach Cottage is an experience I’ll never forget. The light in my room changes beautifully throughout the day, offering a new perspective each time I glance outside – a reminder of the charm that comes with staying in such a special place.
In North African culture, hospitality is a deeply rooted tradition, born out of necessity in the harsh desert environment. For centuries, travelers have been welcomed with open arms, provided with shelter, food, and water as a sign of respect and solidarity. This warm reception continues today, reflecting the deep cultural values of generosity and the opportunity to share the country’s rich heritage with visitors.
Azalaï’s philosophy draws on this tradition, with its name inspired by the ancient salt routes once traveled by caravans carrying salt across the Atlas and Sahara. These routes were vital to the survival of both traders and the regions they served.
The hospitality at Azalaï is a true embodiment of these traditions. Sabrina, the manager, radiates warmth with her ever-present smile and unwavering dedication to making your stay perfect. The staff at Azalaï understands the true meaning of hospitality and goes above and beyond to ensure you feel not just like a guest, but like family.
The Visionary Behind Azalaï Life Experience
Bouchaib Harmouzi, the founder of the Azalaï group, hails from Morocco but spent much of his childhood in France. After studying and launching a construction business in France, he returned to his roots in Morocco, where he embarked on various entrepreneurial projects. One of his ventures that I particularly admire is Kessi Beldi, a glass manufacturing company that honors the traditional Beldi craftsmanship.
When it comes to his hotel projects, Harmouzi envisioned Azalaï as a unique journey—a series of destinations that offer an authentic and sophisticated way to experience Morocco’s untouched beauty. This vision is reflected in each of Azalaï’s five locations, which are strategically placed on Morocco’s pristine Atlantic coastline, within the vast Sahara dunes, and amidst the palm groves of Zagora. Each property embodies elegance and refinement while allowing guests to explore some of the country’s most unspoiled landscapes.
The Origins of Azalaï Beach Cottage: From Second Home to Iconic Retreat
Azalaï Beach Cottage has its origins in a property that Bouchaib Harmouzi purchased in Sidi Beddouzza, originally intended as a second home. Over time, this charming house was transformed into a stunning accommodation that has captured the hearts of its visitors with its unique charm and refined sophistication.
This oceanfront retreat embodies Harmouzi’s business philosophy: taking something ordinary and turning it into something extraordinary, creating a space that perfectly blends elegance with the natural beauty of its surroundings.
Azalaï Beach Cottage: A Hidden Oasis Between Safi and Oualidia
As you journey along the coast between Safi and Oualidia, the landscape transforms into something distinctly different from the typical Moroccan views. The charm deepens as you approach the cliffs of Cap Beddouza, home to Azalaï Beach Cottage, a peaceful retreat that invites relaxation and a deep connection with its stunning surroundings.
Oualidia, known as the capital of oysters, is a must-see if you’re staying at Azalaï Beach Cottage, so be sure to add it to your list of nearby destinations.
Despite being in Morocco, the location evokes the calm, spacious ambiance of the English countryside or the French Riviera. The resort’s unique and authentic decor, curated by Delene Bartholdi, adds to its charm. The atmosphere feels like stepping into an impressionist painting, full of vibrant colors and textures. The lush garden is a blend of palm trees, cacti, olive trees, and mimosas, while a large platform overlooks a wild, untouched beach. A tropical pool makes you feel as though you’re in the Caribbean, while a hidden cave pool with a waterfall adds an element of surprise. Cozy common areas and panoramic ocean views from the bungalows and rooms ensure that every moment spent here is unforgettable.
Unique Rooms and Bungalows: A Tribute to Literature and Travel
At Azalaï Beach Cottage, the rooms offer diverse experiences. Some are nestled in the main house, boasting views of the lush garden and the ocean beyond, while others are in charming bungalows, tucked away within the garden’s embrace. Both the rooms and bungalows come with private terraces, each offering breathtaking ocean vistas.
Bouchaib Harmouzi, an avid traveler and literature enthusiast, has named the rooms and bungalows after renowned travel writers who journeyed across the oceans. Each room and bungalow is uniquely decorated with handcrafted furniture made from driftwood and antique artifacts, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels both personal and cozy.
During my visit, I had the opportunity to explore nearly every room and bungalow at the Beach Cottage, and I can confidently say that each one left a lasting impression. They all possess distinct personalities and characteristics, making each stay feel completely unique.
A Culinary Experience at Azalaï Beach Cottage: Fresh, Local, and Unforgettable
The culinary experience at Azalaï Beach Cottage is a true feast for the senses. The menu highlights fresh, locally sourced ingredients, offering a variety of delicious options, including vegetarian dishes and fresh seafood. Oualidia, just a short distance away, is renowned for its oysters and exceptional seafood, and Azalaï Beach Cottage captures this local flavor, ensuring that every meal is a memorable gastronomic experience.

A Serene Escape with Natural Beauty and Local Discoveries
Azalaï Beach Cottage offers an idyllic escape, blending tranquility, stunning natural beauty, and exquisite cuisine. With Wi-Fi only available in common areas, it encourages complete disconnection, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the surrounding nature and the calming sea.
This retreat provides an unforgettable experience, far from the usual tourist hotspots of Morocco. Days are spent in peaceful relaxation—whether reading, practicing yoga, walking along the beach, or simply reflecting. But when you feel like exploring, there are several nearby attractions worth visiting, including Oualidia’s impressive lagoon, Safi’s renowned ceramics and 15th-century Portuguese fortress, and the historic fortified city of El Jadida.

Azalaï Beach Camp: A Unique Coastal Retreat in Harmony with Nature
Just a few steps from Azalaï Beach Cottage, nestled at the foot of the impressive cliffs of Cap Beddouza and right on a wild beach, you’ll find Azalaï Beach Camp, open from June to September.
This cool and unique camp offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, allowing you to unwind to the rhythm of the waves. Whether you choose to relax, take a walk, read, or simply watch the world go by, you’ll experience the pure freedom of coastal living.
