Discovering Riad Dar Zaman: A Hidden Gem in Marrakech
Not long ago, I returned from a scouting trip to Morocco that left an unforgettable impression. My main goal was to explore some of the locations I’d been keeping in my “virtual treasure trunk” — spots I had long been eager to discover.
As someone who works extensively with event venues and unique locations, I evaluate each one based on various factors that catch my attention.
When it comes to choosing a Riad in Marrakech — with more than 2,000 to choose from — it can be quite a challenge. How does one even begin to narrow down the options? In a vibrant city like Marrakech, where Riads serve as serene retreats amidst the bustling streets, I look at reviews, proximity to key attractions, the ambiance, and most importantly, the service.
What first drew me to Riad Dar Zaman was its stunning courtyard, which offers a perfect view from nearly every angle. Equally impressive were the friendly smiles of the staff and the warmth they managed to convey even before I arrived. It was this initial feeling that led me to explore the place further. During my stay, I quickly realized that at Riad Dar Zaman, the guest experience truly is at the heart of everything they do.

Mornings at Riad Dar Zaman: A Feast for the Senses
Waking up at Riad Dar Zaman is a true delight, especially when breakfast is involved. Their morning spread is nothing short of epic—fresh, local, and entirely vegan and gluten-free. I also learned that you don’t need to be a guest to enjoy it; you can book a breakfast experience at the Riad even without staying overnight. A great tip to keep in mind because it’s absolutely worth it.
And it’s not just breakfast that stands out. I arrived in the evening, and the dinner they served was spectacular—a true culinary experience. A perfect ten for Karima, the talented cook behind it. I’ll dive into that later in this post.
If the weather isn’t ideal, meals are served in an intimate lounge by the fireplace, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere. But if Marrakech’s sun is shining—as it usually does—you have the option to enjoy your breakfast, lunch, or dinner in the beautiful courtyard or on the rooftop terrace, which completely won me over.
A Hidden Gem Recommended by Insiders
I first came across Riad Dar Zaman on social media, but it wasn’t until I received a personal recommendation that I knew I had to experience it for myself. Emma, a former interior designer who has been living in Morocco for over 15 years and curates some incredible locations in Essaouira, insisted I stay here. Her words? “It’s simple, sweet, and well run.” That was enough to convince me. I’ll share more about Emma in another post—she played a key role in my journey, and I had the privilege of staying in one of the spectacular spaces she manages.
Peter, the owner of Riad Dar Zaman, has welcomed guests who have previously stayed at iconic Marrakech properties like El Fenn, La Mamounia, and Riad Yasmine. Yet, time and again, they’ve told him they preferred Dar Zaman. This riad isn’t just about aesthetics or Instagrammable corners—it has a soul. It’s homely, comfortable, and effortlessly inviting. But what truly sets it apart? The warmth of the service.
A Hidden Retreat in the Heart of the Medina
Riad Dar Zaman is a peaceful escape tucked away in the northern medina, in the Sidi Ben Slimane neighborhood. Like most of Marrakech’s most charming riads, it hides behind an unassuming door, nestled within the labyrinth of winding streets. Finding it on your own can be a challenge—better to embrace the adventure and let yourself be guided, at least on your first night.
To make your arrival seamless, the Riad offers a private transfer service from the airport straight to its doorstep. This was especially convenient for me, as my flight landed at night. From the drop-off point, a staff member personally accompanies you to the riad’s entrance. In my case, it was the ever-friendly Adel, setting the tone for the warm hospitality that defines this place.
Upon arrival, I was welcomed with a delicious dinner, carefully prepared in advance based on my selection from a curated menu sent via email. Guests can also request a bottle of wine or champagne to be waiting for them or opt for a surprise from the riad’s menu.
Beyond its warm hospitality and intimate setting, Riad Dar Zaman offers a range of experiences to enrich your stay. You can book guided tours of the medina, take part in Moroccan cooking classes, or indulge in a relaxing massage from a mobile spa service. Whether you’re looking for a cultural deep dive or a moment of relaxation, the riad’s team is always ready to help craft a memorable experience.
Cozy Comfort in an Authentic Medina Setting
The rooms at Riad Dar Zaman are warm and inviting, designed to make you feel instantly at home. And the bathroom—always a key factor for me—exceeded my expectations from the start. My morning shower was nothing short of perfect.
Nestled in Sidi Ben Slimane, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the medina, the riad is surrounded by a maze of charming streets that hold centuries of history. Unlike the busier, more touristy areas, this district retains its authentic residential feel. While you’ll find other accommodations and great restaurants nearby, Sidi Ben Slimane still offers a genuine glimpse into daily life in Marrakech, making it an ideal place to stay.
Peter’s Journey: From the Corporate World to Riad Life
From the moment I started exchanging emails with Peter, the owner of Riad Dar Zaman, I felt an immediate connection. He has that rare ability to make you feel welcome before you’ve even arrived.
Peter’s story is one of transformation. What began as a vacation in Marrakech turned into a life-changing experience. He fell in love with the blue skies, the vibrant light, the intoxicating scents, and the warmth of the locals. That love story still continues today.
Riad Dar Zaman is the fourth chapter in his professional journey, and he seems to excel at anything he sets his mind to. Beyond managing the riad, Peter officiates weddings in the Agafay desert and is something of a neighborhood icon, especially among the local children.
His career path took unexpected turns. After five years at Barclays Bank in the UK, he sought adventure and became an officer in the Royal Air Force, stationed in the UK and Germany. Later, he shifted gears again, earning a degree in advertising from London University in 1997 and working in agencies across San Francisco and New York.
Then, fate intervened. While living in New York, Peter visited a friend in Marrakech—someone he had met two years earlier in Rio de Janeiro. His friend had purchased a riad and was in the middle of renovations. It was November. They had breakfast on the rooftop under clear blue skies, spent evenings by the fireplace with steaming tajines, and Peter found himself enchanted by the energy of the city.
On his second night, he met a Spaniard who renovated riads for a living. Over dinner, the idea of owning one himself was planted. The rest of the week was spent touring riads for sale. The day before leaving, he made an offer on his favorite one. At first, Peter had no plans to turn it into a guesthouse. But once he moved in, he saw the potential—and the rest is history. Today, running Riad Dar Zaman is a full-time passion, and it’s clear he wouldn’t have it any other way.
A Taste of Marrakech: Peter’s Favorite Street Food and the Essence of Hospitality
Just two minutes from Riad Dar Zaman, you’ll find one of Peter’s favorite local food spots—Mustafa’s tiny eatery, where he serves up individual Chicken Tanjias. Cooked in small clay pots over hot coals for hours, this dish is a slow-roasted delight, infused with preserved lemon and a buttery sauce. It’s served alongside a generous pan of white beans, and according to Peter, it’s one of the best tanjias in Marrakech. Mustafa’s place has just four tables, but they fill up fast at lunchtime. The price? A humble 18 dirhams for a meal packed with flavor.
One of the things Peter admires most about Morocco is the deep-rooted tradition of communal dining. There’s something special about sharing food from the same plate, whether with friends or family. This philosophy is woven into the experience at Dar Zaman, where food plays a central role in bringing people together.
Another Moroccan tradition that Peter respects is the way younger generations care for the elderly. In Morocco, it’s common to see young people helping elders cross the street or families living with their grandparents. This warmth and respect are reflected in the atmosphere at Dar Zaman, where hospitality is not just about service but about making guests feel truly at home.
And speaking of hospitality—what to say about Hassan and Adel, the riad’s incredible staff? They are kindness personified, always greeting guests with a smile and going out of their way to help. When I arrived, I spoke to other guests who shared how they had been helped selflessly, from excursion planning to restaurant recommendations. At Dar Zaman, feeling cared for isn’t just a promise—it’s the essence of the experience.
With all this in mind, I can’t recommend this charming riad enough for your stay in Marrakech. The personalized attention and warm hospitality truly define this space.
