Unique Stays along the Draa Valley

Curated Stays along the Draa Valley — A Handpicked Selection

The Draa Valley is home to 300 Berber villages made entirely of raw earth and mud bricks, creating a fairy-tale landscape along the green date palms. This region is one of Morocco’s most spectacular, and it was once the path of trans-Saharan caravans from the north to Timbuktu, especially between the 13th and 16th centuries.

Aside from its rich historical heritage, the valley offers a rare luxury: authenticity. It’s a place where ancient Jewish and Berber communities, medieval Islamic libraries, and shrines to desert saints coexist. The further south you go, the more this magical landscape captured my heart.

I traveled to the Draa Valley in March 2024, designing my own route and personally selecting all the accommodations. I worked with a local travel agency for logistical support, mainly transportation.

I stayed at this place in 2024. The views are stunning, and the interior of the Kasbah is incredible. It’s worth dining there at least once, and if you can stay, it’s truly an experience. Sleeping in a restored castle from centuries ago is remarkable. It’s a restful haven ideally situated on the route to the great south.

Casa Juan, nestled in Nesrate at the edge of the Sahara, is a beautifully restored mud house offering a peaceful base to explore southern Morocco. Juan, an international photographer, infused his love for photography, India, and the Sahara into this unique retreat. With only 8 rooms, each reflecting different countries like Africa and India, it’s filled with treasures from Juan’s global travels.

Abdel, the warm and welcoming host, adds to the magic. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace, where you can watch the sunset over the palm grove and dunes.
